The reason why Cloudina is so significant and is almost known as an iconic fossil is that it is given the epithet of the very first animal that produced a skeleton or a shell. So this is significant; it heralds the beginning of large scale lifecreating shells and skeletons. If we go back to this bit of time just before 550 million years ago, if you are to do the same in a time capsule, and you picked up a handful of sand that age, nothing would be made of animal or plant skeletons. It would all be inorganic or it will be made up of microbes. So this is a huge shift, a significant shift in the history of life, when animals started to create skeletons, for protection and maybe for other reasons. Mostly against predation, but also to grow, and create complex ecosystems. And create new ways of life. New predatory lifestyles. So this is why this is such a significant step in evolution; when you actually build a skeleton for the first time.
